Shand: My names is Shand Garcia, I handle the
advertising sales and some PR and trackside relations for Holeshot Magazine
(a Texas based motocross and off-road publication)
Did you ever race?
Oh yes I use to race a ton, and like a lot of guys I
quit for a while, missed the sport and decided to start racing and riding
again for fun.
If you did race what did you race on?
I have always been into racing motocross, and I
still love to ride 250 2 strokes.
What’s your fav. track?
Man that is a really good question, there are so many
tracks that have popped up that offer a little something different from the
others. Then you have all the old guard tracks that have always been
great.... If I had to pick one track for my last ride it would have
to be Swan MX Raceway.
Well it’s the New Year anything new planed?
Glad you asked, this year (2007) should be a great
year for Holeshot Magazine. We have just celebrated our 6th anniversary, and
we are starting to gain more advertising attention from more regional
motorcycle dealerships and national advertising companies as well.
When these companies and dealerships jump on board with Holeshot it allows
us to go out and cover more races and the moto scene in general...giving our
readers more to read about. If anyone wants to get a subscription to
Holeshot Magazine we can be checked out at www.Holeshotmag.com
What are your goals for the Year?
Our goals for the year are to give more coverage to
the racers and tracks that are here in our region.
What has been your best Holeshot Article?
Oh man, another tough question. I have been privileged
to interview some great people and also write some good stories on the road
trips that I have taken, but with out a doubt my personal favorite would be
Jason Langford's "The Ghost" interview. That interview was like a hidden
treasure for many people that followed his career and then he quit and just
vanished, only to re-emerge 13 years later. I have gotten more compliments
on that interview than I can even count.
You are also a part of a company called Shock Sox, tell us about
it!
Oh yeah, I am very excited about this little product.
Shock Sox was created by Kevin Weable, and he has brought me into the
company to help get the product launched. Shock Sox is the "10 Second
Removable Fork Seal Protector". Shock Sox fork seal protectors are hassle
free and that is opening up the door to all the motocross racers that want
to protect their fork seals when they
are riding, and take them off as soon as they are done riding.
Are there any other forms of racing you would like to try and why?
Well I do like to go trail riding and camping out at
places like Red River (Muenster). And maybe one day I would like to run a
cross-country / off-road race. I would also like to try a mile flat track
race...those guys are flat CRAZY... and it looks like FUN to me.
What do you like to do in your free time?
Pretty much just moto, I love being around the sport.
Do you play any Motocross games?
No not now, I use to play Carmichael 01, but that has
been forever ago. I tried to race a game a while back with my friend Jef
Odom, but he plays everyday so it wasn't a good race.
If there’s one thing in Motocross you would like to change what
would it be and why?
I would LOVE to see all pro/expert classes run 20-30
minute motos. I wish every track owner/promoter would offer that at every
one of their races. If you think about it, just about everyone who races
would love to turn pro and when you get that opportunity to turn pro you
need to be able to run long motos. It all starts at the local level. Plus
from a spectator/fan's standpoint you look forward to lining the fence and
watch the pro class and it's not good to just get to watch them for 6 laps.
I would definitely like to see that
change.
Is there any advice you would like to give out to?
I would like to give some SOLID advise to all the mini
parents. Keep this fun for your kid and your family.... It's OK if Little
Johnny is not that fast. If he is capable of getting fast, then it will come
to him. There are a lot of slow starters that progressed later in their moto
careers...AND THEY HAVE EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIPS WITH THEIR PARENTS!! From a
kids standpoint the sport of motorcycling is about you and you old man
bonding on a dirt bike!! Those will be the best childhood memories that any
mini parent could leave with there child.
In closing is there anyone you would like to thank?
I would like to first thank you guys at DAT MX EVENTS
for this interview and for all that you do promoting races for our
sport...It helps out the sport so much. I would also like to thank John
Willis at Holeshot as well as the contributors, and advertisers that help us
keep the machine rolling. Another thanks goes out to my Shock Sox business
partner Kevin Weable. One last thanks goes out to all the VETS UNITE members
who like to kick back and have a little fun while helping VETS UNITE racers
go after their goals.
